Understanding Alopecia and the Role of SMP
lopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes the body's immune system to attack its own hair follicles, resulting in hair loss that can range from small, isolated patches to complete loss of hair across the scalp and body. It is estimated to affect approximately 2% of the global population at some point in their lifetime, and while it poses no risk to physical health, its psychological and emotional impact is well documented and should not be underestimated.
Unlike many other forms of hair loss, alopecia is unpredictable in its progression, hair may regrow spontaneously, remain static, or continue to spread and there is currently no universally effective medical treatment. For many clients, this uncertainty makes long-term planning difficult and traditional hair restoration approaches unsuitable.

Types of Alopecia Suitable for SMP Treatment
SMP can be an effective option across several presentations of alopecia, though suitability is assessed individually at consultation. The most common types we treat include:
Alopecia Areata
The most prevalent form, characterised by one or more defined patches of hair loss on the scalp. SMP can be used to camouflage individual patches, restoring a consistent scalp appearance and reducing the visibility of affected areas.
Alopecia Totalis
A more advanced presentation resulting in complete loss of hair across the entire scalp. SMP for alopecia totalis replicates the appearance of a full, closely shaved head — restoring a defined, natural aesthetic across the scalp in its entirety.
Alopecia Universalis
The most extensive form, involving complete hair loss across the scalp and body, including eyebrows and eyelashes. SMP can address scalp coverage effectively, and facial micropigmentation options are available for clients wishing to address the appearance of brows simultaneously.
Traction Alopecia
Hair loss resulting from prolonged tension on the hair follicles — commonly caused by tight hairstyles worn consistently over time. SMP can restore the appearance of density and a natural hairline in areas affected by traction alopecia, with results tailored to the individual's hair type and preferred aesthetic.

Navigating Alopecia's Unpredictability
One of the most important considerations in offering SMP to clients with alopecia is the condition's inherent unpredictability. Unlike male or female pattern baldness, which follows a broadly progressive and foreseeable path - alopecia can fluctuate significantly, with periods of regrowth followed by further loss.
At PADDA, this is a conversation we have openly and honestly at every consultation. SMP is not presented as a permanent resolution to an unpredictable condition — it is presented as a tool that can meaningfully improve appearance and confidence at a given point in time, with the understanding that future sessions may be required to adapt the treatment as the condition evolves.
Where hair regrowth occurs within a treated area, the SMP work typically integrates naturally with returning hair. Where further loss occurs, coverage can be extended in subsequent sessions. Treatment planning for alopecia clients is therefore approached with flexibility and a longer-term perspective.
The SMP Treatment Process

A comprehensive and confidential consultation is conducted to discuss the nature, extent, and history of your alopecia, your personal goals, and any concerns regarding treatment.
Stage 1 — Initial Consultation
Given the unique considerations associated with alopecia, treatment planning is given particular care. Hairline design, coverage area, and pigment selection are discussed and agreed upon in full prior to proceeding.
Stage 2 — Treatment Planning
The initial session establishes the base layer of pigment across the treatment area, introducing tone and beginning the replication of follicular detail.
Stage 3 — Foundation Session
Subsequent sessions build density and refine coverage, ensuring a consistent, natural result across the full treatment area.
Stage 4 — Refinement Sessions
A thorough review is conducted upon completion. For alopecia clients, an ongoing monitoring approach is recommended, with periodic check-ins to assess whether further adaptation of the treatment is required as the condition progresses.
Stage 5 — Final Assessment
Is SMP Suitable for Your Alopecia?
SMP can be an effective option for many clients living with alopecia, though individual suitability depends on a number of factors including the type and current stability of the condition, skin sensitivity, and personal expectations.

Are experiencing complete scalp hair loss due to alopecia totalis or universalis
Have traction alopecia affecting the hairline or specific areas of the scalp
